The ability to listen is one which many people would do well
to learn. Listening is a useful tool in
life which can lead to increased confidence, long-lasting relationships, and
patience. Those who listen often have an
increased understanding of people. They
are also able to resolve problems fairly easily because of their strong observation
skills. The truth is, anyone can learn
how to listen better, but the individual has to be willing to do so. Thankfully, there are many benefits
to use as motivation. Here are some of those
benefits.

1. Thinking before Speaking
Many people are quick to speak for the sake of being heard
or pleasing someone. Often times, this
can lead to people spewing misinformation.
This is because there are those who get nervous when someone asks them a
question, wants an answer or needs information. They then feel overloaded and say whatever they
believe will make the other person happy.
However, this can end up hurting the individual in the long run. The incorrect information can end up causing
problems, creating a situation the person tried to avoid by answering quickly.
An important
skill set to master is listening to what others are asking of you, analyze what
was asked and processing the correct response in your brain. Some have a difficult time doing so because
they are afraid to take their time to answer.
What is important to remember is people would rather have a delayed
correct response than an incorrect quick response. More so, you will gain self-confidence through
answering when you are comfortable rather than to please someone else.
2. Valued by Others
Remaining silent and listening to other people is a great
skill to hone. Those who listen are
often depicted as likable by those who speak to them. The world is filled with people who believe
their voices go unnoticed. This is
because there are so many people trying to get their two cents in. They disregard what their peers are saying in
an attempt to be heard. Everybody wants
to be heard, and because of this desire, many people take being unheard to
heart, feeling underappreciated or unremarkable. So, when somebody comes along willing to
listen rather than speak over another person, those who want to speak feel valued
by the individual. Those who listen are
often the first people a person thinks of when they need to vent about
something. Listeners often get to know
people on a personal level as a result.
3. Teaches Patience & Respect
Listening also
helps in teaching patience and respect when having a conversation. When someone is speaking, people usually do
not pay attention and are waiting for their turn to speak. Either that or the person interrupts the
other, making the other person feel unheard.
By listening, you are giving the individual an opportunity to speak
without interruption. Not only that, but
while listening, you are paying attention to what the person is saying. By doing so, you make them feel heard and show
you genuinely care about what they are saying.
This is why many people believe those who listen are good to vent to and
give great advice. They analyze what the
other person is saying, take time to think of a response and give it. They rarely jump to conclusions or interrupt
people.
