Fear is a natural part of human existence. The feeling comes from thoughts of unpleasant occurrences. When people think of fear, they think of pain, suffering, discomfort, etc. As a result, fear often stops people from performing certain actions or following through with decisions that may lead to these happenings. Of course, there are pros and cons to this outcome. Positively, fear can prevent us from going through with actions or decisions that we may regret later on. Fear can also stop us from putting ourselves in dangerous situations. Negatively, fear can prevent us from growing, maturing, and getting to the point in our lives where we are content with ourselves. By learning to manage fear properly, you are able to differentiate a positive fearful experience from a negative one, and by doing so, will allow you to accomplish your goals while avoiding unpleasant situations.
The feeling of fear should not prevent a person from reaching their goals. Most fear experienced is negative fear, the feeling that stems from one’s own insecurities. One of these insecurities is doubting one’s own abilities. Humans are capable of doing anything they set their mind to. This has been proven throughout history. Look at the great minds who have carved a name for themselves in the history books. Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare, and Isaac Newton are some popular names, but one person who exemplifies the management of fear is Socrates, the Greek philosopher who died for his beliefs and teachings. One of the reasons these men accomplished so much is due to their confidence, they were secure with themselves. This is not to say they were fearful of disappointment or failure, because most people are afraid when they are unsure of something or try something new. However, they knew how to manage fear, and though they may have been afraid, they showed perseverance and a willingness to succeed. They knew that the negative fear they were experiencing would lead them to failure no matter what, and rather than succumb to the feeling, they pushed through for their chance of success. With Socrates, his teachings were loved by some and hated by many, eventually leading to his death. However, he did not fear death nor the idea of people disagreeing with his beliefs, because he was confident in what he was teaching. Had he surrendered to fear and halted his teachings due to the negativity received, he would have survived but failed in achieving what he set out to do, spread his word. You do not have to go as far as Socrates to achieve success, you just have to recognize negative fear and push forward. That is how you grow as a person, expand your knowledge, and achieve success.
Be confident in sharing your ideas or opinions with other people, experiencing new things, and pushing yourself to the absolute limit. It is natural to be fearful in new or uncomfortable situations, but the way we handle it defines us as a person. It is what separates the strong from the weak in most cases. To become successful means sometimes putting yourself in fearful situations and remaining confident. Anyone can learn how to handle fear when it arises, and I encourage everyone to do so in order to better yourself. You will go further than you ever have before if you continuously push yourself out of your comfort zone, and the best way to do that is to surpass fear. Be afraid, but be brave.
