Life Advice Blog #20 - Patience

Today’s society is filled with instant gratification.  Everyone seems to want more in shorter periods of time, and many people now lack the patience necessary to deal with everyday life.  As a result, people are becoming spoiled and lazy.  They are stuck in the mindset of wanting things so fast that, when something takes time, they believe it is pointless to continue.  Just because something takes time does not mean it is a worthless endeavor.  It takes time to create, solve problems, and handle situations.  Expecting instantaneous results will lead to nothing but disappointment, resentment, and anger.  Having patience allows us to lower stress and anxiety, work towards achieving our goals, and ends the continuous cycle of wanting, waiting, and giving up.

Patience can reduce stress and anxiety, because it allows us to clear our minds.  When people become impatient, they often get annoyed, angry, or concerned.  They are self-sabotaging, making themselves stressed or anxious for no other reason but impatience. There is no need to create unnecessary stress, especially when a person has no control over the situation. Through patience, a person can expect different results.  People are able to ease their mind when they remain patient and talk themselves through situations.  A person should tell themselves that the item they want to receive, problem they want resolved, or situation they want to handled will happen, but it may take longer than anticipated.  However, the person should also tell themselves it waiting is ok and events we have no control over should not be stressed about.  If we cannot control a situation, there is no point in making ourselves feel stressed or anxious.  Patience should be a reminder that not everything can be given to us instantaneously.  This will allow people to better handle situations requiring patience to deal with properly.

Patience also pushes us towards achieving our goals.  It does so by removing the mindset of instant gratification.  It can take days, weeks, months, and even years to achieve certain goals, but many people fail to realize this.  Often times, people will set out to achieve something, working for a short amount of time only to give up.  This common occurrence is due to people’s obsession with instant gratification.  Companies like Amazon, Apple, Uber, and fast food chains have contributed to this mindset, as they provide goods and services almost instantaneously.  As a result, people expect their wants and needs to become reality as soon as possible, often complaining when this is not the case.  People will not achieve their goals by thinking this way.  Nobody should expect quick results, especially when it comes to long-term goals.  It is important to maintain patience when working towards a goal, reminding oneself that nothing comes easy and everything takes time.  Giving up and complaining will not produce change.  That type of thinking will only create negative outlook on life.  Through patience, a person is able to come to terms with reality, push through the barriers, and slowly but surely succeed at what they set out to do.

Patience will always be a skill people will benefit from. There are many situations in life requiring patience to get through unscathed.  Without patience, there is more negativity, anger, and dissatisfaction. It takes time to get out of the mindset of instant gratification, but by taking small steps, anyone is able to change their habits, especially when it comes to making life more enjoyable.  The world needs to change their outlook, have a little more patience, and stop giving up so easily.  Enjoy the journey, expect slow growth and a lot of waiting, but accept it, and keep moving forward.  Results will show when the time is right.

The Importance of Giving PT.2 - the Dos and Don'Ts

Should we expect to be praised for our deeds or to receive nothing in return?  Does ego play a role in generosity or is humbleness a necessary mindset?  A year ago, we talked about the importance of giving and how beneficial it is to both the giver and the receiver (Link here if interested:  https://scanlonblogs.blogspot.com/2018/11/blog-8-giving.html ).  We also talked about how happiness comes from giving and helping others and how material wealth only goes so far.  What we did not discuss is what we should anticipate and the proper way to behave throughout the process.  The art of giving involves understanding the dos and don'ts based on the situation at hand.  Not every instance of generosity will include the same factors as the previous one.      Do you believe kindness should be met with a reward?  I personally believe it depends on the situation, but we should never expect to be rewarded.  If you give money to a homeless man, your act of kindness may not lead to anyt

Three Life-Long Lessons to Remember #2

Do you need a reminder of what is important in life?  How about the proper way to handle a situation when feeling angry or stressed?  If so, you have come to the right place.  If you know these bits of information already, just remember its important to be reminded every now and again.  So, without further adieu, here are three life-long lessons to remember #2. 1. Money Isn’t Everything      Wouldn’t it be nice if tomorrow, you won the lottery?   The sheer joy you’d feel would probably be something you’ve never experienced before.   What would you do with the money: buy a house, go on an exotic vacation, quit your job?   When this type of pleasure flows over you, the possibilities feel endless.   No matter what you do, being financially free would make you happy, at least for a while.   Eventually, you would want something more than just financial freedom.   Having money is great, but what are you going to do with your money and newly acquired spare time?      We need

The Meaning of Thanksgiving - a Few Words to Remember

Tonight's blog will be shorter than usual due to Thanksgiving, but I still wanted to leave you guys with a few things to remember.  Thanksgiving, or any holiday for that matter, is about family, friends, and making memories, wouldn't you agree?  Personally, I love being able to see my extended family, even if it's for a short while.  The holiday season is, to some, the only time they are able to get together with family and enjoy their company.  Sometimes we need to be reminded of this, so we remember to enjoy the time spent together.  Even if you do not get along with some of your family members, times like these are perfect for making amends if possible.  Do you have any memories like this?  If so, I would love to hear them in the comments.  Overall, remember that Thanksgiving is more than just about eating but sharing a moment with those you love.  Happy Thanksgiving everybody and I hope your day is filled with food, family, and memories. 📖  Be sure to add S
