Life Advice Blog #17 - Work

Everybody works, but how people work varies significantly.  Work is required for our survival, to better our lives, and to accomplish goals.  However, people do not seem to understand that the way they work has a drastic effect on what they achieve.  Some people do not have experience working efficiently while others are lazy and do not want to learn.  Whatever the case, everybody should learn how to work effectively.  Nobody achieves goals by doing the bare minimum and expecting handouts, yet people believe this to be the case.  People need to lose that mindset in order to prosper. Applying certain methodologies into your work, such as working hard, working smarter, not harder, and being consistent are the best ways to do so.  These methods increase productivity and build the foundation for a successful future.

Working hard is putting extra effort into a goal, project, or task you want to accomplish.  It is the difference between those who are successful and those scraping by.  This is because working hard is not only an act, it is a state of mind.  The act of working hard comes from the desire to succeed.  Those who work hard understand that success does not come easy. Accomplishing goals takes time, effort, and desire, all of which come from hard work.  People should regularly work hard, because it increases productivity and an increased chance to accomplish goals.  Lazy people will often half-ass everything, do the bare minimum, and expect what they want to come easy.  Life does not work that way.  By training one’s brain to work hard, it is effectively making them more efficient.  The standards are raised, and doing the bare minimum no longer brings a sense of accomplishment.  So, if you are in a situation where hard work is needed, but you do not feel like doing anything, do it anyway.  Make your own success by ending your lazy streak and becoming productive.  Making it a habit will change your life for the better.

The saying “work smarter, not harder,” is a quote to live by, as there is a lot of meaning behind the words.  Working smarter, not harder, is using simpler methods to complete tasks based on the individual’s preferences. People often believe that they have to follow set instructions in order to accomplish tasks or goals, regardless of how difficult it may be.  However, many of the tasks to complete, problems to solve, and obstacles to maneuver can be dealt with using different strategies.  The only variable that remains the same throughout is the end goal, to do what was set out to be done.  Everybody is unique and has their own way of doing things.  If people accomplish what they set out to do, and do not hurt anyone in the process, then they should perform in their own way.  Ask yourself this, if there was an easier way to complete a task, would you stick with the standard method?  Most people would say, “probably not,” but continue to do so regardless of their personal views.  People may be scared to think outside the box, because other people make them feel like there are not unique individuals, or are afraid to go outside the lines due to fear of failure or criticism.  However, working smarter, not harder, is what successful people have done in the past, present, and future.  They have become successful, because they work using their own methods and do what they believe is the simplest, most efficient way to get things done.  If it works for you, do it.

Working hard is important, and working intelligently is beneficial, but if there is no consistency, then the work done will not amount to much.  Consistency is the key to success.  Being productive one day out of the year will not net a positive gain.  Any work done, whether it be at a job, or towards achieving a goal, requires consistency.  If nobody was consistent at their job, they would not be paid.  If work towards a goal is halted, then the goal will not be achieved.  Many people struggle with consistency due to pure laziness.  There are times where people do not feel like working towards achieving a goal.  Sometimes it is justifiable, but most of the time they use whatever excuse they come up with to justify their own slothfulness.  One example is the phrase, “I will do it tomorrow,” the #1 killer of consistency. Tomorrow never comes, and people are stuck in this habit of being lazy.  Do not fall victim to this way of thinking.  A good way to prevent this is to set up a schedule and stick to it. This will help you become consistent by creating a habit; “I have to do this today because the schedule says so.” If that does not work for you, find something that does.  No matter what, never give up on what you set out to do.

The Importance of Giving PT.2 - the Dos and Don'Ts

Should we expect to be praised for our deeds or to receive nothing in return?  Does ego play a role in generosity or is humbleness a necessary mindset?  A year ago, we talked about the importance of giving and how beneficial it is to both the giver and the receiver (Link here if interested:  https://scanlonblogs.blogspot.com/2018/11/blog-8-giving.html ).  We also talked about how happiness comes from giving and helping others and how material wealth only goes so far.  What we did not discuss is what we should anticipate and the proper way to behave throughout the process.  The art of giving involves understanding the dos and don'ts based on the situation at hand.  Not every instance of generosity will include the same factors as the previous one.      Do you believe kindness should be met with a reward?  I personally believe it depends on the situation, but we should never expect to be rewarded.  If you give money to a homeless man, your act of kindness may not lead to anyt

Three Life-Long Lessons to Remember #2

Do you need a reminder of what is important in life?  How about the proper way to handle a situation when feeling angry or stressed?  If so, you have come to the right place.  If you know these bits of information already, just remember its important to be reminded every now and again.  So, without further adieu, here are three life-long lessons to remember #2. 1. Money Isn’t Everything      Wouldn’t it be nice if tomorrow, you won the lottery?   The sheer joy you’d feel would probably be something you’ve never experienced before.   What would you do with the money: buy a house, go on an exotic vacation, quit your job?   When this type of pleasure flows over you, the possibilities feel endless.   No matter what you do, being financially free would make you happy, at least for a while.   Eventually, you would want something more than just financial freedom.   Having money is great, but what are you going to do with your money and newly acquired spare time?      We need

The Meaning of Thanksgiving - a Few Words to Remember

Tonight's blog will be shorter than usual due to Thanksgiving, but I still wanted to leave you guys with a few things to remember.  Thanksgiving, or any holiday for that matter, is about family, friends, and making memories, wouldn't you agree?  Personally, I love being able to see my extended family, even if it's for a short while.  The holiday season is, to some, the only time they are able to get together with family and enjoy their company.  Sometimes we need to be reminded of this, so we remember to enjoy the time spent together.  Even if you do not get along with some of your family members, times like these are perfect for making amends if possible.  Do you have any memories like this?  If so, I would love to hear them in the comments.  Overall, remember that Thanksgiving is more than just about eating but sharing a moment with those you love.  Happy Thanksgiving everybody and I hope your day is filled with food, family, and memories. 📖  Be sure to add S
