Five Methods of Maintaining Consistency

Achievement requires consistency.  The problem is, people struggle to be consistent for various reasons.  Whether it is anxiety, other responsibilities, or lack of motivation, consistency can be difficult to maintain.  However, it is not impossible, especially if you practice through various means.  Here are 5 methods of maintaining consistency.
1. Relax & Avoid Overwhelming Yourself
Anyone can create a plan of action, but sticking to it can be difficult.  Often times, we overwhelm ourselves when we form a new goal.  We believe all of our time should be spent on this goal.  Guilt kicks in when we relax because we feel unproductive.  However, most people forget that rest and relaxation are part of the process.  Without breaks, we can quickly burn out, lose interest, and give up.  In doing so, the person has done exactly what they wanted to avoid.  Consistency requires motivation and a willingness to succeed.  We cannot maintain consistency by forcing ourselves to work on a single project in one fell swoop.
Rest and relaxation allow us to recharge, focus on something different, and reduce stress levels.  After doing so, we can come back with a fresh pair of eyes and work efficiently.  Not only that but also we will remain motivated while continuing to have fun.  When we are motivated, we are more likely to remain consistent.

2. Be Realistic With Your Goals
We have all been in the position of feeling overwhelmed.  Most of the time, when a person feels overwhelmed, it is because they took on more than they could handle.  This is natural because we believe, in order to succeed, we need to take on the entirety of a project.  Those who do this, however, quickly realize the implications of their decisions.  This, in turn, can make a person lose interest.  Therefore, one of the best ways to remain consistent is to be realistic with your goals.  Rather than take on the entire project, form smaller goals that chip away at the main goal’s foundation.  For example, instead of trying to write an entire book, set a goal to write individual chapters.  This way, the project becomes less daunting, and you feel motivated to continue with each miniature accomplishment.

3. Tell Others of Your Plans
It is difficult to be consistent with your work when you are the only person who knows of it.  Depending on the type of person you are, it can be hard to be your own boss.  You determine the workload, and sometimes this lack of directive can cause laziness and a lack of motivation.  As a result, our work suffers.  To remedy this, it is a good idea to tell others of your future goals and achievements.  By doing so, you are putting yourself in a position in which future decisions impact your character.
We do not want to be known as lazy, dishonest, or quitters by our peers and loved ones.  Rather, they should be proud of us for working towards our goals and following through with what we say.  Because of this, telling others of our plans increases motivation and gives us more of an incentive to remain consistent.

4. Be Patient
Impatience is a killer of consistency.  The longer events take to occur, the less interested people become, especially in today’s world.  It seems as if everybody wants everything handed to them instantaneously.  Many do not realize success takes time.  “Rome was not built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour,” as John Heywood said.  Basically, Rome was successful as a result of years of construction, planning, and execution.  It was not random and certainly did not happen overnight.  Think of Rome as your own goal and apply the same logic.  By coming to this realization, it can increase one’s motivation to succeed.  It is telling the person that consistency is the key to reaching a goal no matter how long it takes.  We need to remind ourselves that we will succeed as long as we continue to put in the effort.  Patience is a virtue, and the sooner we realize this, the easier it will be to be consistent.

5. Reward Yourself
Remember to reward yourself when you accomplish something.  Even if it is a small achievement, such as going to the gym for the first time or writing down notes for a book, that is progress.  Progression should be rewarded, not only because the person achieved something, but because it gives them the motivation to continue.  If you are rewarded for achieving small goals in hopes of reaching a larger goal, you are more likely to remain consistent.

The Importance of Giving PT.2 - the Dos and Don'Ts

Should we expect to be praised for our deeds or to receive nothing in return?  Does ego play a role in generosity or is humbleness a necessary mindset?  A year ago, we talked about the importance of giving and how beneficial it is to both the giver and the receiver (Link here if interested:  https://scanlonblogs.blogspot.com/2018/11/blog-8-giving.html ).  We also talked about how happiness comes from giving and helping others and how material wealth only goes so far.  What we did not discuss is what we should anticipate and the proper way to behave throughout the process.  The art of giving involves understanding the dos and don'ts based on the situation at hand.  Not every instance of generosity will include the same factors as the previous one.      Do you believe kindness should be met with a reward?  I personally believe it depends on the situation, but we should never expect to be rewarded.  If you give money to a homeless man, your act of kindness may not lead to anyt

Three Life-Long Lessons to Remember #2

Do you need a reminder of what is important in life?  How about the proper way to handle a situation when feeling angry or stressed?  If so, you have come to the right place.  If you know these bits of information already, just remember its important to be reminded every now and again.  So, without further adieu, here are three life-long lessons to remember #2. 1. Money Isn’t Everything      Wouldn’t it be nice if tomorrow, you won the lottery?   The sheer joy you’d feel would probably be something you’ve never experienced before.   What would you do with the money: buy a house, go on an exotic vacation, quit your job?   When this type of pleasure flows over you, the possibilities feel endless.   No matter what you do, being financially free would make you happy, at least for a while.   Eventually, you would want something more than just financial freedom.   Having money is great, but what are you going to do with your money and newly acquired spare time?      We need

The Meaning of Thanksgiving - a Few Words to Remember

Tonight's blog will be shorter than usual due to Thanksgiving, but I still wanted to leave you guys with a few things to remember.  Thanksgiving, or any holiday for that matter, is about family, friends, and making memories, wouldn't you agree?  Personally, I love being able to see my extended family, even if it's for a short while.  The holiday season is, to some, the only time they are able to get together with family and enjoy their company.  Sometimes we need to be reminded of this, so we remember to enjoy the time spent together.  Even if you do not get along with some of your family members, times like these are perfect for making amends if possible.  Do you have any memories like this?  If so, I would love to hear them in the comments.  Overall, remember that Thanksgiving is more than just about eating but sharing a moment with those you love.  Happy Thanksgiving everybody and I hope your day is filled with food, family, and memories. 📖  Be sure to add S
